The role of father as a nurturing participant in family life is now well established.
Expectations are that dads play a positive and active part in the day to day upbringing up of children. There is no such thing as a perfect dad. Being a parent is probably the most important job in the world but it comes with long hours, poor conditions and no training! So don’t be hard on yourself if an occasional mistake is made or just do not know what to do next. You are only human, and humans do make mistakes. If you can graciously allow for weakness and failures in yourself you will allow the same for the others in your family and others around you. Get help and good advice Acquiring the effective parenting skills may not be so easy. You will need to ensure that the advice and tips on family life and parenting resources are wholesome and trustworthy. Dads are guys and guys often do not communicate their problems very well so help and advice from family and friends may be well meaning but not very practical. There are also various classes and courses on parenting and family life skills arranged by different interest groups, churches, government agencies and other groups of like minded dads working together. You are free to disagree with this statement but I suspect that most dads will get there information and advice quietly and privately online or via the written word. The amount of information that is available in written form in book stores and on the internet nowadays is nothing short of phenomenal. Information about family life There are books, magazines and a whole host of online parenting resources. Go into any chain store stationers and you will notice 'Mans Magazines' carrying articles on improving your abs, the latest 200 mph supercar, something about Kylie and relationships with wife, your kids and family life in general. Just like anything else in this challenging world the more you know and understand a subject the more you are able to form a considered opinion. Learning will help you make better quality decisions to the benefit of your family life. |
